Maja reads... BOOKS

3. avgust 2013

Hello my lovelies! Today I'm going to talk about a few books I read in the past couple of months. Some books are in paper form (the ones from Sophie Kinsella) and some I read on my Samsung Galaxy Tab2 via Kindle app. :)

Sophie Kinsella - I've got your number

Synopsis: This book is about a girl called Poppy Wyatt who is about to marry her ideal man, Magnus Travish. One evening her 'happy ever after' starts to fall apart as she looses her phone and her engagement ring. She's going out of her mind, pacing around the hotel lobby when she discovers an 'abandoned' phone in a thrash bin and thinks to herself "Finders keepers." Well, the owner of the phone, a businessman called Sam Roxton doesn't really appreciate Poppy reading his texts and emails and demands his phone back. Soon Poppy and Sam increasingly upend each others lives through emails and text messages. As Poppy juggles wedding preparations, mysterious phone calls and hiding her left hand from Magnus and his parents... she soon realizes that she is in for the biggest surprise of her life.

My thoughts: I loved reading this book. It was so fun and full of surprises. I really loved how Poppy and Sam became closer and closer, starting to develop feelings for each other. I don't want to give away too much in case you decide to read the book for yourself, but I especially liked the ending - it was a nice surprise. :) A lovely book, romantic, light, great for summer time.

Sophie Kinsella - Rembember me?

Synopsis: Lexi wakes up in a hospital bed after a car accident, thinking it’s 2004 and she’s a twenty-five-year old with crooked teeth and a disastrous love life. But, to her disbelief, she learns it’s actually 2007 – she’s twenty-eight, her teeth are straight, she’s the boss of her department – and she’s married! To a good-looking millionaire! How on earth did she land the dream life??! She can’t believe her luck – especially when she sees her stunning new home. She’s sure she’ll have a fantastic marriage once she gets to know her husband again. He’s drawn up a ‘manual of our marriage’, which should help. But as she learns more about her new self, chinks start to appear in the perfect life. All her old colleagues hate her. A rival is after her job. Then a dishevelled, sexy guy turns up… and lands a new bombshell. What the **** happened to her? Will she ever remember? And what will happen if she does?

My thoughts: I really liked this book. This is the second book I've read from Sophie Kinsella. I have no complaints other than it seems that Sophie does tend to repeat her writing style - there's always the main heroine and she always seems to be in a bad relationship or doesn't have one at all. There's always some guy that pops up and she gets entangled with him. Having said that, I still love her books. They are always really fun to read and are pretty romantic. This one was especially interesting since the main character (Lexi) lost her memory. I loved the fact that she didn't get her memory back and suddenly remembered everything (that's just such a cliche). All in all it was a great book. :)

John Jenkins - The Thirst Within

Synopsis: Seventeen-year-old Tori Green is an orphan - again. Raised by her grandparents in a quiet Midwest town after an accident claimed the lives of her parents, Tori must now move across the country after her last surviving grandparent passes away. To a new family that doesn't seem to care about her. To New Orleans, The City That Care Forgot. In a city full of new faces and new experiences, Tori finds solace in her new friend, Thierry, for whom she falls head over heels despite her many reserves towards the beautiful stranger. Thierry appears to genuinely care about Tori, until his brother shows up hinting towards a relationship that can never be. What is the big secret?

My thoughts: This was my first Kindle book and I loved it. It's a book about vampires so, if that's not your thing, don't bother with this one. Even though it is a book about vampires it's really fresh and new, nothing resembling Twilight, True blood, Vampire diaries... it's does its own thing. I found it really interesting to read and a bit mysterious (Thierry's brother was the most mysterious part and the way Tori's parents died). I loved the ending and I can't wait for the second book to come out.

Brenda K. Davies - Awakened

Synopsis: Traumatized by her past, and struggling to move on from it, Sera has spent the past three years of college hiding herself from the world and content to stay that way. A chance encounter with Liam shatters her sheltered world, leaving her stunned and shaken by the strange feelings and emotions he arises in her, feelings she never thought she would experience and that frighten her in their intensity. Harboring a dark and deadly secret of his own, Liam knows that he should stay away from Sera; that he will only bring her more hurt, but he is irresistibly drawn to her and unable to deny himself the pleasure that only she can bring to him. But when their pasts collide with their present, and Liam’s true nature is revealed, will their love for each other be enough, or will they be torn apart forever?

My thoughts: I also loved this book. Again, this one is also about vampires. :) I love that the story is set in college so the main characters are a bit more mature, older (I can't really relate to teens anymore). The thing that I was most impressed with in this book, was the sex - lots and lots of sex, but good sex, nothing weird or too dirty. :) It was a bit more realistic, even though it is about vampires, it was written really nicely and wasn't too perfect and sugarcoated. The relationship between Sera and Liam was very passionate but it wasn't perfect by any means and that's what I liked. There is a second book from this series and I'm planing on reading it soon.

Lisa Jane Smith - The Awakening (The vampire diaries)

I think a lot of people know these books because of the TV show. I've heard a lot of people say that the books are not nearly as good as the show, so I decided to see for myself, if that's true. I absolutely love the TV show but I think you shouldn't compare books and shows/movies too much - you should really look at them individually. I was surprised at how different the characters and the whole story was in the book, so I've written down the most significant things. If you are a fan of The Vampire diaries as a show and haven't read the books, this maybe interesting for you. :)

Elena has blond hair and blue eyes, she is the queen of the school, gets every boy she wants, has a very strong personality. She is remarkably similar to Kathrine so Stefan tries to stay away form her as best as he can. Her best friends are Meredith (black hair, gorgeous girl) and Bonnie (a small redhead, descendant from druids - so basically a witch). Elena and Caroline don't really get along and see each other as competition. Elena's parents die in a car crash (she wasn't with them in the car). She has a younger (4 year old) sister called Margaret (not a brother called Jeremy). Their aunt Judith and her fiance Robert take care of them both.

Stefan is a gorgeous looking guy, not too tall, with black hair and green eyes. He moves to Fell's Church (not Mystic Falls) from Italy (well his last name is Salvatore - duhh). He lives in a boarding house, along with an old lady who is the owner. He is a loner and likes to be by himself but becomes friends with Matt (Elena's ex). His family was an aristocratic family. When he and Damon were still human, they looked after Katherine while her father was away on business. She and her father were from Germany, she was a fragile, pale little girl. She was very ill as a child and when she was on her deathbed, her handmaiden Gertrude sought out Klaus and he turned her into a vampire. She then acquired a special ring for her that would allow her to walk in the sun. Katherine drank only from animals.

Katherine loved both brothers and they her. She turned them both into vampires (they exchanged blood) and provided them with daylight rings but Stefan and Damon were not prepared to share her and demanded she makes a choice. She was devastated that she couldn't have them both and that they were fighting each other because of her, so she went into the garden, took off her ring and (supposedly) burned. Stefan and Damon went mad and fought each other, killing each other at the end and waking up as vampires in their family tomb. Damon joined killers and mercenaries, feeding on humans and becoming stronger and more powerful, Stefan fed on animals and stayed hidden. Damon is much much stronger than Stefan, can change form to different animals (crow is his chosen form) and penetrate minds, forcing in thoughts of his own.

The book ends with Stefan being accused of several murders and missing - his car abandoned (all because of Damon).

My thoughts: I loved this book. I think it was really interesting and though I always pictured Elena as Nina Dobrev, Stefan as Paul Wesley and Damon as Ian Somerhalder, I tried to step away from the TV show and enjoy the book for what it is... and so I did. I really liked it and am now on the second book or the second part - The Struggle.

Have you read any of these books, what are your thoughts on them? What books have you read recently?
